Artist - Mohan Malviya

Mohan Malviya – Born in 1969, the artist comes from a region in Madhya Pradesh which still among other things, a vital tradition of tribal creativity. To understand his works, one needs to understand his circumstances and his life that has mouled his experiences. A child of the forests, Mohan was born in and grew up in a village by the Narmada river in Nimar, in Madhya Pradesh in a family of farmers. Mohan Malviya is an artist who seems to be mapping the mysterious in his canvases not so much to fathom or measure it but to affirm it. His art at one level is a passionate apprehension of mystery. While it is noticed that the new abstract art in India has largely emerged through the young artists of Madhya Pradesh whose inspiration has come from Sayed Haider Raza and J Swaminathan, it has to be noted that a rich convention of both ritualistic and non-ritualisitic kind of abstraction has been vitally present in the folk and tribal traditions of Madhya Pradesh. Mohan’s work is a powerful reminder of that legacy and inexhaustible resource.
