Veer Munshi

Veer Munshi – (B. 1974), Qualification

• B A from Kashmir University in 1976
• BFA (Painting) from M.S. University Baroda in 1981

Veer Munshi, was born and brought up in Kashmir Valley. He is one of the few painters in India today who is able to transform his experiences as an exiled refugee into the language of painting. Munshi was was forced to move to Delhi in 1990 when it was no longer safe for him to stay there. For Munshi, viewing pleasure plays no role in his objective as an artist. His work is very personal and at most times disturbing. It is his reaction to a specific event – in this case, the ongoing political situation in his home, Kashmir – and he wants everyone who views his work to understand what is happening there. In Veer Munshi’s paintings we see a reflection of the anguish and fear he felt whilst living in his own home, a fear that plagued so many other Kashmiris as well.

Kind of Work

His work has been inspired not only from the political and social situation in India but also his own real life experiences. He has the ability to transform real life experiences into the language of paintings. Veer Munshi is the quintessential artist – brooding, thinking and conceptualizing to create a new every time he touches his brush to canvas. The perspective is global yet the rooted-ness pan Indian – he carries the wistful beauty of Kashmir in his mind’s canvas along with the polished perfection of the Baroda School to immortalise all that he chooses to paint. Veer Munshi’s canvases present images which are intriguing.
The power of Munshi’s realistic approach is magnified by his ability to convey mood through composition and corresponding use of colour. The artist also manages to manipulate the colour he uses to suit the message of his paintings. Shades of red, orange and lush geen, otherwise warm and inviting, are given harsh and dark roles. His purples are potent and the shades of brown always cloak and muddy everything.

Kind of Work

One could call his works landscapes of a certain kind. Except that the land that is scarped is more an aspect of an inner geography, rather than an external location. There is no representation, though there are leaves, shapes, points, dark areas, and patches of colour. The familiar recedes and the wholly unfamiliar is not allowed to surface.

Mohan Malviya

Mohan Malviya – Born in 1969, the artist comes from a region in Madhya Pradesh which still among other things, a vital tradition of tribal creativity. To understand his works, one needs to understand his circumstances and his life that has mouled his experiences. A child of the forests, Mohan was born in and grew up in a village by the Narmada river in Nimar, in Madhya Pradesh in a family of farmers. Mohan Malviya is an artist who seems to be mapping the mysterious in his canvases not so much to fathom or measure it but to affirm it. His art at one level is a passionate apprehension of mystery.
While it is noticed that the new abstract art in India has largely emerged through the young artists of Madhya Pradesh whose inspiration has come from Sayed Haider Raza and J Swaminathan, it has to be noted that a rich convention of both ritualistic and non-ritualisitic kind of abstraction has been vitally present in the folk and tribal traditions of Madhya Pradesh. Mohan’s work is a powerful reminder of that legacy and inexhaustible resource.

Kishor Shinde

Kishor Shinde is a celebrated contemporary Indian artist known for his deeply expressive and abstract visual language. Born in 1958, Shinde earned his Diploma in Painting from the prestigious M.S. University, Baroda, in 1981. His career spans over four decades, marked by a continuous evolution of style and form, rooted in the exploration of rhythm, energy, and the metaphysical.
Shinde’s canvases are dynamic compositions—textured, layered, and emotionally resonant. Though abstract in form, his works are intentional in their use of color and gesture, channeling a cathartic energy that bridges the spiritual and the sensual. As the artist explains, “While standing in front of the white canvas space, the inner eye opens… abstract versions of rhythm build visual syllables and symbols… myriad colors fill the spaces. I am painting in a cathartic fervor.”
A recipient of multiple accolades, Shinde was awarded the National Award for Painting by the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi in 1998, and the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 1978. His works are part of prominent public collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and the Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi

Amit Kalla

Born in 1980 in Jaipur, Amit Kalla has done his masters in art & aesthetics from J.N.U, New Delhi. His work grows from his education in Ancient Indian art and aesthetics. He paint and write poetry blending elements of each into the other always exploring the deep forces which have created my culture and those which unite all of humanity.

His work practices are highly responsive to the environment they are produced in. His most recent solo show with a well known photographer explored the philosophical concept of The Seer and the Seen. He has traveled and worked collaboratively and spontaneously with a number of different artists across India.
In Amit’s words, “I feel different ways at different times-which yes I do face to face, sometimes in the shape of rainbow / sometimes it is semi-shadowed / sometimes a solitary chant / sometimes a magical hot hues/ sometimes faded expressions / sometimes contrasts, there is a certain Naivety in my painting style, but I use this as a non conformity to become more of an individualist using more imagination.”
